Immunizations

The Campus Health Service is pleased to offer immunizations, TB screening, and travel immunizations to UA students and staff. Routine vaccinations are offered as a walk-in service during regular CHS hours. Travel immunizations (Typhoid and  Japanese Encephalitis) or travel medications are given by appointment only.

Due to recent changes in medical health plan policies, labs and immunization services may in some cases be considered third party requests and therefore cannot be billed to insurance. Labs and immunizations required for program entrance, work, and travel are third party requests. Students must pay for third party requests at the time of their visit.

CHS offers a Student Discounted Rate for all vaccines and titers.

  • TB Skin testing. Please note we do not perform TB skin tests on Thursdays.
  • Ordering of Quantiferon Gold tests for TB screening or positive TB skin tests
  • Ordering of blood titers to confirm immunity status to various diseases.
  • Regular hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm except for Wednesdays when we open at 9:00 am.

  • Hepatitis A: This is a 2-shot series, given over a 6-month period. This is considered a lifetime vaccination
  • Hepatitis B*: This is a 3-shot series, given over a 6-month period. For most, this is considered a lifetime vaccination. A 2-dose series is available for those who qualify
  • TwinRix: This Hep A+B combination vaccination is a 3-shot series, given over a 6-month period. This is considered a lifetime vaccination
  • HPV*: It is given as a 3-shot series, over a 6-month period. This is a considered a lifetime vaccination which protects against the human papillomaviruses that cause most cervical cancers, anal cancer, and genital warts
  • Influenza*: This is a seasonal vaccination, and should be updated yearly
  • Japanese Encephalitis: This is a 2-dose series, given 28 days apart (this is available only with a Travel appointment)
  • Meningococcal (MenACWY)*: This is considered effective protection against meningitis caused by serogroups A, C, W, & Y for approximately 5 years, and might need to be updated for travel into endemic areas
  • Meningitis B*: This is a 2 or 3 shot series, given over a 1 to 6 month period. This is considered to offer protection against meningitis caused by serogroup B
  • MMR*: 2-MMRs are considered a lifetime vaccination*
  • Polio*: The inactivated injectable Polio vaccination is considered a one-time adult booster for those who received the Polio series as a child
  • Rabies: This is a 3-shot series. For continued risk/exposure to potential rabies, titer levels may need to be checked per CDC recommendations to determine booster needs
  • Shingles: For people 50 years or older. Need CHS provider order
  • Td (Tetanus/Diptheria) or Tdap (Tetanus/Diptheria/Acellular Pertussis)*: Recommended to booster every 10 years
  • Typhoid: This is available in either the oral or injectable vaccination. The oral vaccine is effective for 5 years, and the injectable vaccine is effective for 2 years (this is available only with a Travel appointment)
  • Varicella (Chicken Pox)*: For those who did not have chicken pox as a child, this is a 2-shot series. It is considered a lifetime vaccination
  • Yellow Fever: Needed for travel into countries of Yellow Fever transmission. A primary dose is considered long lasting (this is available only with a Travel appointment). Currently there is a national shortage of yellow fever vaccine. At your travel appointment, you will get a referral to obtain the vaccine where it is available in Tucson.

Each vaccination has risks and possible complications. Contact the Campus Health Immunization Nurse (520) 621-2292, your healthcare provider, or the CDC at www.cdc.gov or 1-800-232-2522.

The University of Arizona requires proof of measles and mumps (MMR) vaccination for all students born after 12/31/56. To view the full requirements please visit the CHS Immunization Requirements page.

 College of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Nursing students enrolled at the University of Arizona must meet expanded immunization requirements.

COM Student's applying for away rotations may e-mail their away rotation forms to:

chs-rotationforms@distribution.arizona.edu

Please complete the personal information sections before e-mailing the forms to CHS. A CHS nurse will complete, sign, and return the forms to the student via secure e-mail within 48 business hours. Students found needing further immunizations, serologies, or drug screenings in order to complete the forms will be contacted by CHS Immunization Clinic staff regarding their deficient requirements before the forms are signed and returned. There is a charge for this service and it is based on the amount of time it takes nursing staff to complete the forms. The charges are as follows:

     $10.00 for 20 minutes

     $20.00 for 21 minutes and over

Students submitting in excess of 5 forms should anticipate a wait time of greater than 48 business hours for their forms to be returned.

Please note, the CHS Immunization nurses complete only immunization related rotation paperwork. If your rotation form requires a signature for a physical, statement of health, or fitness to work you must make an appointment to see a physician in the CHS General Medicine clinic.

It is the student's responsibility to know the type of lab or drug test needed for their rotation(s). For drug tests, unless otherwise requested, the 9 panel drug test will be ordered.

    • To upload your immunization record login to your PatientLink portal and sign in with your NetID and password.

Travel Clinic

Travel Immunizations are available to all UA students, faculty, and staff who are planning on traveling out of the country.

Important Information for Travelers to Africa and South America: Yellow Fever Vaccine Shortage

Due to manufacturing issues, Y-Vax, the only yellow fever vaccine licensed in the United States, will not be available until further notice. The CDC has arranged for another yellow fever vaccine to be available on a limited basis.

If you are traveling to a part of the world for which the yellow fever vaccine is required or recommended, you should schedule an appointment for a travel consult as soon as possible. If your nurse consultant determines that you need the yellow fever vaccine, you will be referred to a local clinic that offers Stamaril, a French vaccine that provides protection from the Yellow Fever Virus, that has partnered with the UofA to offer the vaccine to CHS Travel Clinic clients.

Travel Immunizations are available to all UA students, faculty, and staff who are planning on traveling out of the country. A travel appointment is required and is a comprehensive appointment in which the traveler is given a Travax Travel Report, which includes a complete summary of required/recommended vaccinations for travel to the specific destination, any travel advisories, and relevant country-specific information. The traveler would receive all desired vaccinations at that time, as well as prescriptions for anti-malarial medication and treatment of Traveler’s Diarrhea.

  • Do not make your appointment too early or too late before travel.
    • Too early: You may not received up-to-date travel information, your health status could change, you may not know your exact itinerary, or you may need longer immunity from some vaccines (ex. Typhoid injectable immunity lasts two years).
    • Too late: vaccines may not be effective if travel is in less than 10 days after travel consult or there may not be available appointments (CHS travel clinic books up fast)!
    • When traveling to anywhere other than Western Europe, it is best to complete your travel visit 6-10 weeks before travel.
  • You must know your dates of travel and your itinerary**
    • **You must know the locales and dates where you will be in each country to determine vaccination and medication needs.
    • If your destination changes after you make your appointment, you must call 621-2292 to let us know. If you do not inform CHS of the change, your appointment may have to be rescheduled.
  • Bring a current immunization record to your appointment.

Book an appointment with the Travel Clinic. After your visit, the nurse will submit electronic verification of your travel visit to Study Abroad. No health information will be shared, it is verification of a travel consult only.

Obtaining pre-travel health care advice from a clinician familiar with travel is an important step in preparing for international travel. Ideally, this visit should take place at least 4-6 weeks before travel. The pre-travel visit includes a discussion of immunizations, prophylactic medications (such as antimalarial drugs), and specific health advice for preventing and treating traveler’s diarrhea and other illnesses the traveler may encounter.

An appointment with our Travel Clinic can provide you with a comprehensive pre-travel consultation, which will provide you with the most up-to-date information for the planned destination, including current travel advisories for disease outbreaks, natural disasters, social disruptions, or other events with health-related concerns.

Why do I need a travel appointment?
According to the Journal of International Medicine:

  • 50% of travelers who visited primary care physicians for travel advice received the WRONG medication to prevent malaria.
  • 25% of travelers who visited their primary care provider did not get necessary vaccinations or received UNNECESSARY immunizations.
  • Updating of routine vaccinations are often overlooked when planning for international travel.
  • Yellow fever vaccinations can be administered ONLY by AUTHORIZED healthcare providers.

Getting proper vaccinations prior to travel can help to prevent deadly overseas diseases. It is important for travelers to understand the health risks that traveling internationally may pose and be actively involved in preparing for health travel.

  • What if I am going to be late for a travel appointment?
    • Please call 621-9202 to let us know you are going to be late. Please keep in mind, your appointment may need to be rescheduled.

  • If I don't know my itinerary can I still have a travel appointment?
    • In order to best serve you and ensure your travel health needs are met, we need to know what locations you will visit in each destination county, how long you will be there, and what activities you plan on doing. If you do not know your itinerary, you may need to be rescheduled and you will be charged for another appointment.

  • Are vaccines included in the cost of my travel appointment?
    • No.
  • What will my travel appointment cost?

  • Do I need to bring my immunization history to my travel appointment?
    • Yes, Definitely! You may have had some vaccines already and not need more. Likewise, you may need boosters of some vaccines. Without your previous vaccine records, it may be hard to best determine your needs. However, it is acceptable if you do not have your records but know your vaccine history.

  •  Can I have my travel appointment by phone?
    • No. We do not do travel appointments over the phone. At your visit, you will receive a travel packet with current information about your destination and the nurse will make recommendations based on your specific travel needs.

  •  How long will my appointment take?
    • That depends. If you are going to a country in Western Europe your appointment may take 10-20 minutes. If you are going to a country other than Western Europe your appointment will take 40 minutes. If you are going to multiple countries (other than Western Europe) your appointment may be longer.
