What is HPV?
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the name of a group of viruses spread by skin-to-skin contact, especially sexual contact. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States but many people don't show visible symptoms, making it important to vaccinate to protect yourself and others.
Who should get the HPV vaccine?
Anyone 9-26 years old should get the HPV Vaccine. If you are 27 years or older, you should consult your healthcare provider to see if it is right for you.
- The vaccine is most effective when given prior to any sexual contact.
- If you are already sexually active, the vaccine can still protect you from types of HPV you have not already been exposed to.
The Benefits
At Campus Health, we provide the Gardasil®9 vaccine which:
- Protects against more than 90% of HPV-related cancer including cancer of the cervix, vulva, vagina, penis, anus, and throat.
- Protects against genital warts.
- Reduces risk of HPV transmission to yourself and sexual partners.
The Cost
- If you have U of A Student Insurance, your Gardasil®9 vaccine will be covered 100% so long as you are below the age of 27.
- For other plans, contact your insurance and ask if Gardasil®9 will be covered for you.
- Without insurance, the vaccine can cost up to $150 per shot (3-series shot). However, there are assistance plans available. Talk with your Campus Health Provider or visit www.mereckvaccines.com for more details.
How do I prevent the spread of HPV?
The best thing you can to do protect yourself and others from HPV is to get vaccinated. The next best thing is to use barrier methods like condoms or dental dams during sexual activity.
