Gender Reassignment Benefit

The Gender Reassignment Benefit at UA:

The Student Health Insurance Plan offers a Gender Reassignment benefit to plan enrollees. This benefit is available at all three State of Arizona universities and was passed due to advocacy efforts originating at the UA.

The Gender Reassignment benefit affords members critical access to medically necessary, gender-confirming health care. This access to care is a crucial element to the health, academic success and retention of transgender-identified students.

What are the requirements?

Aetna Student Health details the requirements necessary for each surgery covered by the plan. Please reference the full policy for specific requirements (

How do I take advantage of this benefit?

Depending on where you are in the process of transitioning, you can navigate this benefit in different ways:

If you want to transition but do not know if you meet all of the requirements for using these benefits OR if you are seriously considering transitioning but need more information: Make an appointment to see one of the Clinical Care Coordinators in Counseling and Psych Services. Clinical Care Coordinators are experts in navigating the system and are there to help you with that process – this is not a counseling appointment. They will help you figure out next steps and how to move forward.

If you are already in the process of transitioning and would like to undergo one of the covered procedures: Please be sure to review and follow the GRS Student Checklist.  The provider performing the procedure will need to complete the  Precertification form. Obtain the required letter(s) of referral as requested in the Aetna Clinical Policy Bulletin. Once you have obtained this information, email Lori Piper, the Insurance Program Coordinator for the Student Health Insurance. // 520-621-5858
