CAPS Educational Workshops
Workshops are designed to give students the tools they need to overcome their problems. We currently offer three workshops (more coming soon!), each comprised of 3 sessions (provided once per week) of 50 minutes each. Each workshop comes with a student workbook that will allow you to practice your new skills between sessions.
Workshops are available to all students! If you would like to meet with a counselor before joining a workshop, simply schedule or "walk-in" for a triage to get started with our services. If you would like to join a workshop without becoming a CAPS client, call (520) 621-3334 to sign up. If you are already connected to CAPS services, just let your counselor know that you are interested.
How it Works
A student may attend more than one workshop and you may go through each workshop as many times as you like. To inquire about our workshops you may call CAPS (520) 621-3334 or simply speak to your counselor. To get the complete experience, students must come to each session on time. There is a one time $30 fee charged at the first workshop. This includes three 50 minute sessions and the option to reassess your needs at completion of the workshop series. Join us if you want to learn important life skills that carry you through difficult times. CAPS Cares. We’re here to help.
CAPS Workshop Offerings and Schedule
We want our workshops to work for you. That's why each workshop is offered on multiple days and times, and new sessions are added every week. Speak with your provider, a triage counselor, or call CAPS at 520-621-3334 to check on workshop availability.
RIO (Recognition. Insight. Openness.) is for feeling mentally calm and clear. It was developed by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and has been utilized by university mental health services across the country.
Recognition, Insight, Openness (RIO) focuses on building skills and creating flexibility in how you respond to distress. The three sessions are divided into content that builds upon itself. The sessions include modules dedicated to:
- helping you gain a deeper understanding of your concerns
- creating flexibility in how you view and approach these issues
- helping you take steps toward living with a wide range of emotions
By the end of the workshop, you will have a better sense of your personal values and how you want to focus your energy.
Peace in the Pandemic was developed by the CAPS team in direct response to Pandemic related distress. COVID-19 has disrupted so many aspects of our lives including social and family relationships and academics. Constant worries about getting sick and general isolation have taken a toll on our individual and collective mental health. The Peace in the Pandemic workshop educates participants about neurophysiological responses to threat, mindfulness, and self-care, and provides guidance for how to keep moving forward when feeling overwhelmed and discouraged.
Anxiety Toolbox in another workshop developed by Cal Poly and focuses on helping you understand anxiety symptoms and build skills to manage these symptoms. The three sessions are divided into content that builds upon itself. The sessions include modules dedicated to:
- understanding anxiety
- introducing a method for slowing down and disentangling the experience of anxiety
- developing alternative responses to anxiety
By the end of the workshop, you will have your own individualized plan for managing anxiety.
Getting Unstuck, also developed by Cal Poly, focuses on helping you understand depressive symptoms and build skills to manage these symptoms. The three sessions are divided into content that builds upon itself. The sessions include modules dedicated to:
- understanding depression
- exploring how thoughts and behaviors impact depression
- addressing how you can begin to make changes to thoughts and behaviors in order to better manage depression
By the end of the workshop, you will have your own individualized plan for getting unstuck!
